25,000 Rat Neurons Learn to Fly
Posted by James Matthews
Simon Cogan excitedly sent me a link to Is That a Pilot in Your Pocket?, a Wired article that discusses how the University of Florida has taught 25,000 disembodied rat neurons to fly an aircraft in a flight simulator. I also found this University of Florida press release.

Advance in Neural Networks
Posted by James Matthews
I was sent this article from the Idaho State Journal detailing a new algorithm developed to train neural networks. Unfortunately, the article never went into details.
Fortunately, a little Googling yielded the researcher's website, and from there to the project page. Seems to be little in the way of an actual paper or algorithm details, so I'd appreciate anyone who knows more about this to contact me.

$50,000 AI Breakthrough!
Posted by James Matthews
Paul Zimmons kindly pointed me to this EETimes article about some new AI software that will apparently revolutionize the field. The article starts off: "A software development firm says it has solved one of the hardest problems in artificial intelligence, successfully extracting hierarchical categories from streams of sensory data. And for $50,000, HNC Software Inc. will tell you just how it accomplished that feat." The article states the software uses a sort of neural network to achieve its remarkable results. The software sounds incredible but I won't be convinced until I see it myself and at $50,000 for a demonstration...I'll wait. Here is the HNC Cortronics page.

Future Neural Network May Look Like Insect Antenna
Posted by James Matthews
Forrest Briggs pointed me to this article that discusses how fish and insect olfactory systems may lead to some very interesting new neural networks. By allowing neurons to alter the timing of other neurons it is possible to classify (N-1)! items using N neurons. Quite impressive. The article doesn't go into much detail so if anyone has more information, I'd like to hear about it.

Security Software Taught Abnormal Movements
Posted by James Matthews
This Reuters article details a new security software program that can distinguish between normal behaviours such as walking and talking against abnormal behaviour such as fighting and collapsing. The program uses a neural network to learn and classify the motion detected. The article says this is a new concept, but I know of similar research efforts elsewhere. Anyway, neat stuff.

AOL using Neural networks!
Posted by James Matthews
According to this Slashdot post, AOL is started a new filtering system that utilizes neural networks to filter out unappropriate material. The post references this Wired.com article, which brings up a cool example of the new technology. The software blocked a site called "The Art of Oral Sex", yet allowed "Is Oral Sex Safe" through - showing the context-sensitive nature of the blocking system. Unfortunately, due to patents pending, the details of the software are very fuzzy.

Neural networks and Finance

Meant to post this a week ago, but Yahoo ran this badly titled article, that discusses the pros and cons of neural network powered financial software. Surprisingly, the article doesn't mention TradingSolutions, the NN-powered software developed by NeuroDimension.
